Add the fact that there’s no blood, no zombies, no hookers, no machine guns, and that your character doesn’t speak a single word. In fact, the game itself isn’t named after this heroic munchkin, but after the aforementioned guest appearance by Princess Zelda. It would be laughed out of the office in a heartbeat.
However, The Legend of Zelda, in all its incarnations, is arguably the best videogame of all time.
What makes the Zelda series so irresistible? First, it is the oldest, simplest, and most profound story throughout history. Good versus evil. Even knowing how gray human nature can really be, something in all of us identifies with the idea that with perseverance, courage, and spandex tights, good can and undoubtedly will triumph over evil. Hope even in the most cynical of ages.
The Legend of Zelda world itself is simplistic, with all elements of life intertwined to create Hyrule, from the fiery volcanic reaches of the Gorons, to the Zora’s crystalline, watery depths, all the way to hot desert expanses and gloomy spirit dimensions. However, simple is not congruent with boring, and in a way, its lack of complexity, like the intellectual confusion of Myst or the complicated combos of Mortal Kombat, makes it a classic choice to young children and adults alike.
Zelda's graphics are clean and smart, realistic without being humanistic, like a comic rather than reality TV. The controls are easy to comprehend, yet allow a range of attacks and movements, though the inability to jump was always a source of good natured vexation for me. The character Link is an extremely likable fellow despite the fact he doesn’t say a single word. In fact, there’s hardly a character not to like (I, however, reserve judgment for Navi of Ocarina of Time.)
But the real reason it’s the best game of all time, despite the philosophical and practical ones I’ve discussed, is that it’s FUN. Honest to goodness fun, no matter your age, no matter your race, religion, economic status, or bubblegum flavor. It’s just downright fun to play.
And truly, that’s why we all play videogames in the first place. by Lauren Faszewski
