Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the newest upcoming platform game in the historically successful Mario universe and is the sequel to Super Mario Galaxy. It is the fourth 3D platformer of the Mario world, following after Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and its predecessor, Super Mario Galaxy, and is set to debut in North America on May 23rd 2010 and in Europe on June 11th.
The gameplay is similar to that of the first Super Mario Galaxy, with the platforms being based on 3D planets of different sizes and environments. However, the planets are now smaller allowing Mario to jump between planets while riding Yoshi, who can swing his tongue across gaps. Yoshi also can gain different abilities by eating various fruits, which can inflate him or boost his speed or discover hidden trails. While the blue Star Pointer from the first game remains, it is replaced by a red dot while riding Yoshi which allows the player to control the dinosaur's tongue that is not only good for traveling, but of course swallowing opponents.
Some features from Super Mario Galaxy return, such as Lumas and balance ball levels. These previous features are coupled with the new, like a drill to burrow into planets or the Rock Mushroom, which lets the player smash through previously impenetrable barriers. And according to some sources, Luigi will return and will be playable at some point during the game.
Super Mario Galaxy is known as one of the Nintendo Wii's most popular games, and it looks like Super Mario Galaxy 2 is going to continue that trend. With brand new planets to explore and a variety of spectacular abilities, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a gravity defying, utterly delightful new addition to the Mario universe. by Lauren
