Review

No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle is an action game released for the Nintendo Wii in January 2010 in North America, followed by Europe on May 28th. Just like its predecessor, it delivers much of the same blood and violence on the otherwise squeaky clean Wii console, with a few polishing touch ups here and there.

The plot begins three years after Travis Touchdown succeeded in becoming the top assassin in the United Assassins Association and subsequently walked away. He finally returns to Santa Destroy, and is promptly informed that his assassin rank has spiraled downward to a mere 51st. After the death of his best friend Bishop, whose head is shoved into a paper bag and tossed into Travis' window, Travis swears revenge and carnage ensues.

The combat of the second game takes after that of the first, with familiar wrestling moves and deathblows. Travis can switch between four beam katanas during battle depending on the weaknesses of that particular foe. And though he's been lowered to rank 51, Travis only fights fifteen bosses. Shinobu and Henry, returning from the first game, are playable in certain sections, and have their own unique capabilities. However, gone are the fees to enter ranked fights, while Travis can still enter mini-games, varying from puzzles to racing, for money or improved stats.

Also mimicking the first game is the lack of camera control and frantic combat. However, one of the great advantages of No More Heroes 2 is the new streamlined version of Santa Destroy. Transit times between areas is now minimal, and that time can now be devoted to what the game is all about: tearing people apart.

No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle has a quirky sense of humor, impressive graphics, and loads of blood and gore to boot. Expanding on the original with streamlining and style, No More Heroes 2 delivers everything with violent panache that's like a sucker punch in the face. But only the best of ways. by Lauren
