Is bigger better? Although they look strikingly similar to one another, the Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL do have some key differences. The Nintendo 3DS XL is slightly shorter than the 3DS, as it is 3.66 inches long versus 5.3 inches. However, the XL is larger in width, making it easier to handle, whereas the XL is at 6.14 inches versus 2.9. The input and Wi-Fi connectivity stays the same. Both have external storage and support SD memory cards, where the XL supports SD and SDHC. Software for both is cartridge type, and both have an online store. One advantage that the 3DS has is its camera, but for most gamers this may be unnecessary.
Smudge Proof Tech: The new XL provides a fingerprint resistant screen, with the 'select', 'home' and 'start' buttons are easier to depress, because they are made of plastic. The XL also rests more comfortably in the center of your hands, so play is much easier. The original 3DS had only three lid positions, while the XL has four and the stylus slides much easier from the right side, instead of along the top and back of the 3DS. It appears that the 3DS XL's autostereoscopic screen is a bit more of a hassle than the original, particularly when you are playing motion-sensing games. This is because subtle movements can darken or double exposure on screen.
You do get an additional 30 minutes of battery time out of the new XL, but having the three-dimensional aspect fully engaged, will drastically decrease your playtime. The 3D XL is spectacular in any type of three-dimensional game when you become accustomed to it, because it provides an auto swivel camera, but can become erratic with excessive movement. It is a limitation when it comes to first and third person games. However, overall, the Nintendo 3DS XL provides a slightly longer playtime, larger, easier to see and play on screen, and better 3D graphics than the original.
Besides, the advantage of a bigger screen, this sytem gives you extended battery life, + 1hr compared to standard 3DS: Example, the 3DS mini gives 3-5 hours vs XL which gives 3.5-6 hours.
