Single player mode lets you play online.
Arcade ladder tests your skills in a way to fight out a tournament to defeat Shao Kahn through ladder mode, gradually getting tougher as you go higher.
Story mode you go to the lair to fight Goro in round one. There are 16 chapters, you have to fight at least four times with a character you can’t choose.
Challenge tower is more or less a learn players and moves quest, to conquer the elder gods, it gets harder each time. There are 300!
Two player ladder mode works nicely. You can tag in/out of fights to switch 1P to 2P. Some times you're up against 2 CPU players during long combos. Level design is top notch, the scenery is wild, a city being destroyed by monsters, military attacks, s&m torture chambers, misty graveyards; one fight arena takes place in the middle of a road with cars passing in front of and behind you! During hits you're player builds up a power-move bar which is easy to execute (DOUBLE PRESS L1 + L2 + R1 + R2) This pulls off a big hitting bone crushing combo in mad cinematic. During a fight, players clothes get shredded.
A new round begins with a cool intro sequence, unique to characters. Sonya Blade enters the stage by calling for backup minimally dressed and after a brawl she has black eyes, bloody soaked face, barely dressed, not much cloth left on her.
In the crypt you can spend your Koins (game currency) and unlock loads of stuff - outfits, stages, new characters. MK has new download content too. Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street can be purchased from PSN, he's worth it.
