Review
Mass Effect 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to the ground-breaking 2007 release ‘Mass Effect’. With it arriving in shops in late January I have rounded up some of the key new features that we can’t wait to get our hands on. Continuing the saga, Mass Effect 2 takes place 2 years after the conclusion of the original where you play as Commander Shepard travelling throughout the galaxies in search of human colonies under distress.
Throughout the game you will fight ‘collectors’ along with ‘reapers’ in order to save the humans from being harvested. Mass Effect 2 will be accompanied by some really cool features to make the game fresh. The first main upgrade that mass effect has received is the complete remodelling of the combat system. The new and improved combat system now offers a more dynamic, interactive experience some of the new tweaks are the ability to crawl while downed (including AI). Allowing your opponent to continue to fire at you and crawl to safety, also the introduction of a ‘Heavy Weapon’ system where the player can essentially kill someone a thousand times over.
One new improvement that should be popular is the introduction of regenerating health; this I’m sure will be received well by veterans of the original who never want to see another batch of medi-gel. Similar to this the ammunition system has been changed, originally the guns in Mass effect were all based on heat and once they had overheated you had to wait. This has been changed to the more conventional ammunition system where the player has to store ammunition and manually reload the guns they use.
Mass Effect 2 will also utilise a save game transferring system where if you have played the original mass effect you can import their character to the new game including all of their inventory, weapons and decisions made. This will allow the player to continue straight form where they left off where as if the player has not played the original they will be brought up to speed on the story of Commander Shepard as well as given the opportunity to create their own character.
These are just a few of the new features that are coming in Mass Effect 2 on January 26th 2010, the game will be coming to Xbox 360 and Windows and shall offer a large amount of DLC to be confirmed later.
Bioware have also announced that there will be a collector’s edition of the game that offers the buyer the full game in a steel tin. It will also include Alternative cover art, Concept art book, a copy of the first issue of the mass effect comic, behind the scenes DVD. The collector’s edition will also include a code to download the ‘Collectors Armour and Rifle’ giving the player an instant boost of health, speed and regeneration.
This game is a definite buy for me and I think I’ll pick it up in the January sales by Daniel
