FIFA 10 v Pro Evolution 10

The annual Autumnal battle for football supremacy on the Xbox 360 heats up this Friday as PES 10 is released. Fans of both versions of the beautiful game, will tell that their game reigns supreme but which one does? The purist player will argue the slick passing of PES wins the battle but a FIFA fan will tell you that the wealth of game modes, presentation style and more official licenses than you can swing a cat at will win.
Each game has new features:
FIFA

  • 360-degree motion control – You’re no longer limited to running in 8 directions. Any angle of run is now possible.
  • Create your own set piece – No longer constrained to use default free kicks.
  • Improved ‘keeper animation  - more realistic tipping the ball over the bar.

PES

  • Konami have developed their own 360-degree model – this (like FIFA) allows you to perform precision runs and inch-perfect shots.
  • The Master League has been revamped. The interface is more user-friendly and split into 3 sections: Club House, Stadium Walk and Office. Each section relates to a different facet of your managerial responsibilities.
  • The re-appearance of the Champions League option, this adds that dash of authenticity to the proceedings.

As you can see, neither game has strayed too far from the 2009 counterpart. Is this a good thing? Well it’s not dreadful, both games played well in single player last year, PES had the more arcade like play, a fast passing attacking game where as FIFA took a more cautious approach with build up play pivotal to any attack.

So, which game wins? Until FIFA 09 I have always been a PES man, even with the dross of PES 07 and 08. FIFA 09 changed that. The gameplay was more fluid and realistic than in years gone by. The ‘keepers weren’t prone to running out of their box on a suicide mission, only to be rounded by the forward and lose me the game. The online play didn’t lag every couple of minutes and my counter-attacking style of play annoyed many a player over Xbox Live! FIFA will win the battle, after the last 2 poor efforts from Konami they had to almost start from scratch. FIFA 09 only needed a tweak or two, that will be the difference between them and FIFA will take the title. by Edward Johnston
