DJ HERO - What’s in the Box?

Now if you’re reading this, I’m guessing you’re one (like most of us) who has far too many plastic peripherals lying around that there’s no more room for the actual console. Seeing as the Guitar Hero franchise has secured a permanent position in our living rooms, with enough games to rival the entire iPod family, Activision decides to defy all criticism that the “Hero” era is dead and spins out a new mix, in the form of DJ Hero. DJ Hero Vs DJ Hero Renegade Edition differences

Like the name states, it’s a game that puts you in the shoes of a Dj as you spin your way through 93 remastered mixes, ranging from Hip-Hop to Dance and even the Rock genres, assuring there’s something for just about any taste in music. As with the previous Guitar Hero games, DJ Hero features it’s own set of peripherals to add to our ever growing pile of gaming plastic, this time in the form of a realistic DJ mixer/turntable which holds surprisingly well under heavy bashing, there’s also a Renegade edition of the kit, which features stylish gold plated parts, a black deck and a metal cross fader and effects dial, also, with the added £50 on this edition, you get an exclusive 2-CD album containing unreleased tracks by Jay-Z and Eminem, plus a sleek carry case that converts to a performance-ready DJ stand. The design of the turntable has been kicked back old school to the days of the vinyl that featured only one record (turntable) as opposed to newer mixer models that have two records, this gives the game a more authentic DJ experience, as there is more engagement with the cross fade and dial so you get the vibe of being a real DJ, an added touch is the ability to flip the mixer to accommodate both preferences, right or left.

The game features a fully licensed, all-star DJ cast, with cameo appearances from DJ AM, Jazzy Jeff, Daft Punk, DJ Shadow, Grandmaster Flash, the list goes on. The multiplayer feature of the game allows for you and a friend to go down head to head in DJ battle where it’s your scratch skills against theirs on the same track, there is also the option to bring on a guitar controller from one of the Guitar Hero games to strum to the beats while mixing tracks, which adds an extra touch to the DJ experience. There are two online multiplayer modes, Player Match and Party Sessions and an online leaderboard to pit your mixing skills against other DJ Heroes across the world.

Just like it’s Hero predecessors, the structure of DJ Hero consists of a note highway with streams ready to be scratched at, this time though, there are just three streams, left and right for each track or turntable and the middle for sampling, here you use the cross fader to access the left and right streams as you would a left and right turntable while mashing the buttons in accordance the notes on the streams, that’s just the beginning though, as the higher difficulty levels require more button pushes, holds, fading and scratching, this is where you truly feel like a DJ as the experience is almost identical to what a real DJ would be doing when mixing the track. Thankfully, the game is more forgiving than it’s Guitar Hero cousins in that if you miss a note (and you will very often at first) the music doesn’t just stop and you get kicked out of the track, instead you have the chance to get back to the mix as the music just cuts off briefly and then picks up again, letting you know where you are on the track. Pull of enough successful scratches and you set off Euphoria, this is where the effects dial comes along, spinning it puts you in overdrive, much like the whammy bar on Guitar Hero guitars, keep getting combos and you get Rewind, here you can spin the turn table round to rewind the track and replay an area to get multiple points in the process. Is DJ Hero good and well worth buying? It’s addictive gameplay mechanics, superb setlist and mixes will definitely leave you coming out with a smile. by Zeel Okoye
