Assassins Creed 1: With tremendous hype, an over the top ad campaign and the beautiful Jade Raymond as it’s Producer, the original Assassins Creed was a sure win for game of the year, well that was until we all spent about 4 hours on it and realized one sure thing, it never actually evolved in gameplay and ultimately became a bit boring, and quite amazingly repetitive. Setting the amazing visuals, and twisted history lesson aside, the game had no real depth to it, as once you had done the first two missions, everything from then on felt like a rinse and repeat

Assassins Creed 2

Give it two years and Ubisoft tries to right this wrong by retiring their assassin poster boy Altair and handing over the task to his late 15th century Italian descendant, Ezio Auditore. Having just witnessed the public murder of his father and brothers, he sets out on a quest for vengeance and now has his mind set on bringing the templars to justice, though as he gets closer to his goal, he soon discovers the conspiracy to be a lot greater than he can handle.

He enlists the help of various characters, to assist in his quest, one being a famous figure renowned deep in history, a very young Leonardo Da Vinci, who provides information and gadgets for Ezio to try out, with the availability of blueprints you find of course one such gadgetry is Leonardo’s flying machine, which is used for infiltration in one a mission. The game is divided into only a handful of cities, with the inclusion of doctors, tailors, blacksmiths and characters to aid Ezio in his quest. The Playstation 3 version of Assassins Creed 2 goes further in letting you link your game with a version of Assassins Creed: Bloodlines for the PSP to unlock six additional weapons, ensuring you are never caught unarmed.

There is also an economy system in place now which helps in the management of your income, this is in the form of a village, owned entirely by you and can be upgraded and managed however you see fit, even acquiring citizens so as to tax them which in turn generates income for you to spend on new weapons, clothes and potions and what not. With the amount of side missions, collectibles and exploring to be done, you’ll find yourself getting carried away a lot and straying from your initial mission of vengeance.

Just like in the first game, we see the return of the automatic jumping and wall climbing abilities Altair flaunted, though having been tweaked a little, it still shows it’s flaws when you are looking to perform say, a precise jump on a ledge that could spell death if missed, thankfully, Altair’s arch nemesis, deep water, has been taken care of here, I can clearly remember trying to jump from boat to boat in the first Assassins game and always getting the death screen pop up due to Altair’s lack of learning the breaststroke, now you can actually dive into water to evade pursuers, and even control the boats (gondolas) as a means of transportation, if you wish to do so. Combat is fairly the same with added combos this time and the enemy A.I. now having the ability to disarm you as you can them, this can be annoying as you get drawn into not wanting to use your best weapons in battle for fear of losing them to the enemy and not being able to retrieve them after the battle. One big addition to the gameplay though, both to sneaking and combat, is the ability for Ezio to hire thieves and prostitutes to aid him in his battles against the guards or just distract them.

In all, Assassins Creed 2 does so many things so well, from the visuals, landscapes, voice acting and even character expressions, to core gameplay elements, it’s all been carefully thought after and executed; here that. Assassins Creed 2 is everything the first tried to be and much more, of course, with less repetition thrown in. by Zeel Okoye
