Review

Animal Crossing 3DS was one of the very few spectacular stereoscopic LCD displays of games on the 3DS at the Electronic Entertainment expo. There were hardly any ‘playable’ games as the majority of demos were merely interactive shows, either using real-time game engine assets like Mario Kart or running in streaming video like Nintendo's own Kid Icarus: Uprising, and Capcom's Resident Evil. At the expo, Animal Crossing 3DS was displayed as being in the development stage and the demo was meant only to be watched.

However, the development stage was also highly appreciated because the familiar Animal Crossing world was displayed in stereoscopic LCD magnificently. The salient feature of Animal Crossing 3DS demo was the ‘rolling effect’ of the game's world which was manifested by one of the Animal Crossing humans roaming in the terrain and bumping into an animal occasionally. In one instance, this animal was shown to be a bear which raised high hopes that new creatures will be featured in subsequent issues. The stereoscopic effect was at its best when the human was shown to be wandering into a house that had different types of furniture. All the items in the house could be seen clearly when the camera moved closer to the character and was rotated around.

As compared to Wii, the texture details especially of the grass and furniture, were visible in greater details and were far superior, although as compared to Wii's 60 FPS the game was running at 30 frames per second. Even the details on the checkerboard and sofa were easily visible.

It is not very clear as to what will be the ultimate Animal Crossing design as compared to Nintendo DS and Wii but Animal Crossing 3DS will certainly enthuse fresh life in an animal infested village with great stereoscopic LCD displays. This virtual life game from Nintendo is being prepared for 3DS and promises to be a must own game.
